What's a Social Impact Tech Company?

Social Impact Companies are focused on building businesses that work towards creating a better society. They focus on solving problems in areas as small as local communities and as large as global issues. Some common social impact companies include things like making mental health care more accessible, or helping job seekers up-skill to get better jobs.

While Social Impact Companies can span a ton of different industries, there are a few that stand out. Healthcare, education, and environment are three of the top industries.

Common Social Impact Industries & Examples

While Social Impact Companies can span a ton of different industries, there are a few that stand out. Healthcare, education, and environment are three of the top industries.

An example of a healthcare social impact company would be a company like Bright Health, that makes learning about and selecting affordable insurance policies more simple. Their company mission is broad, with " improve healthcare." We hope it works!

An education social impact company example might be Academia.edu, which puts research papers online and therefore makes scientific knowledge more accessible to all, for free. Their mission is to "accelerate the world's research." Sounds dreamy. We'd like to plug ourselves here at Bridged as well-- we want to help more people get high-paying careers by breaking down the gates around tech jobs.

Environmental social impact companies are in abundance. It's hard to have a company focusing on the environment, and not have it do societal good! Think about all the companies anchored around "carbon-neutral," and there's a big part. One of our all-time favorite examples of a Climatech social impact company is ZeroAvia. ZeroAvia is a company that replaces standard plane engines with hydrogen-electric powertrains. Essentially making flying carbon-neurtal-- a huge plus for those of us who love to work remotely!

Do Social Impact Companies Hire Remotely?

Short answer: absolutely! Social Impact Companies often focus on hiring all kinds of tech jobs. If you're motivated by doing social good, we recommend picking a career path based on your current strengths, learning the additional skills, then targeting your outreach to remote-first companies. Finding the best social impact tech companies can be a challenge, but it's also an exciting opportunity to discover organizations that are making a positive difference in the world. There are many sources to explore, including industry events, online directories, and social media platforms. We love following events such as the SOCAP (Social Capital Markets) conference to identify up-and-coming companies in the space. If you're fortunate enough to attend, it can also be a great way to meet and connect with companies to learn more about their innovative solutions.

Online directories such as Good.Co, B Corp, and Impact Makers can also be valuable resources for finding and researching social impact tech companies. With so many resources available, finding the best and newest social impact tech companies has never been easier.

Job Hunting at Social Impact Tech Companies

We recommend spending some time thinking about what you'd like to get out of a remote job. What aspects about remote jobs are important to you. If you plan to travel, we recommend prioritizing jobs that do not have a lot of meetings so you aren't dealing with timezone changes. If you're working from home for personal reasons, this may not be a problem. But think about it.

Next, we recommend researching jobs that align with your skills and experiences. We've made it easy here at bridged to browse common jobs that cool companies have. After you've picked a job, we recommend using our free career coaching platform to keep track of your progress in establishing skills.

Some Great Questions When Job Hunting:

  • Do I mind being in a lot of meetings?
  • Do I truly want to be "remote," or have the option of an office/hybrid?
  • What are my motivations for switching to a remote job?
